Brief History
The Saracen Head pub is located in the centre of Glasgow. The original Saracen Head was built in 1755. There is a lot of history to the pub and was owned and run by the same family for over 100 years. Nowadays, the pub is situated just across the road from the original site. The current licensee has put together a portfolio of the history of the pub, and was able to give us a lot of information on the previous owners, as well as recent unexplained activity. The pub is also home to the skull of the last witch to be executed in Scotland which resides in a glass case in the bar area- Click here to view.

The Saracen Head

The Saracen Head

It is believed that the pub is haunted by, among others, the ghost of a former owner, Angus.

Psychic Medium Walkround
We began the evening by doing a walkround of the building with our psychic medium, Scott. He managed to come up with many interesting facts about the pub and also some names and other relevant information.

We started our walkround in the bar area. Scott felt there was a very dense atmosphere as though there were a lot of people packed into the room. Just inside the door, there is a small raised stage in the corner. Scott felt that this was a meeting place, a place for the spirits to gather together. He picked up on the fact that there was a lot of history to the place and that the history involved different generations of a family. Scott sensed that there was a connection to smugglers. He also felt that there had been activity at the far end of the bar. Things would have been seen and felt in this area, and things may even have been moved. We asked Anne if she was able to confirm any of these facts and it seems that there was a connection to smugglers and the area Scott had been referring to, was a place that she had seen and felt things on many occasions.

We moved down to the cellar area below the bar. In the main room, Scott picked up on a man by the name of Jim who seemed to be drawn more to women. He also felt that there was another man in the area, who was more likely to be a landlord or owner. He sensed that March 17 th was a significant date and also got the year 1859 as being significant. Scott felt that there was a stream of people coming down into the cellar, and that something was planned here. Scott sensed someone singing the song ‘Annie Laurie’ and felt this may have been a reference to a woman called Annie, who may have owned or worked in the pub.

We moved into a smaller room within the cellar area, which is where the barrels are kept. In this area, Scott picked up on a small man who was given jobs to do in this area. Scott felt drawn to one of our competition winners, Angela. He felt she must have had connections to the pub in some way, possibly through an ancestor who used to come here and still felt attached to the place. It seemed that she was meant to be here. Angela was unsure if any relatives had any connections to the pub, but felt before she arrived that she was meant to come here, even though she couldn’t understand why.

The Investigation
We decided to split the team into two groups. One group would investigate the bar area, while the other group would investigate the cellar.

Base Readings
No abnormal EMF or temperature readings detected.

Bar Area (Group Vigils)
Group 1 - We set up our infrared surveillance camera and three digital camcorders in the bar to monitor the area during our vigil and proceeded to ask for some spirit activity whilst running our sound recording equipment. There were no unusual sounds heard by us at the time of recording, but on playback we can hear a distorted voice responding to us as soon as we had finished asking each question. We continued to ask questions and continued to receive an apparent response from the distorted voice. One of the spirits believed to haunt the pub is that of Angus a former owner, we had asked for a name and remarkably captured the name "Angus" in response on one of our sound recorders - See EVP File 1. We then asked why he was here and got a response "just trying to help you" - See EVP File 3
During our vigil one of our EMF meters, that was sitting on a table started flashing rapidly displaying a strong fluctuating field around the area, we attempted to investigate possible rational reasons for this but could not find the cause. This happened just as we were requesting for any spirits in the room to alert us to their presence, the timing of this event was startlingly close to our request. We later asked if Angus was responsible for triggering the meter and received an immediate response, "yeah" - See EVP File 4
We picked up many light anomalies around the bar area on our still cameras, digital camcorders and wireless surveillance camera during this vigil 9 (See Video Files).

Cellar Area(Group Vigils)
We set up a digital camcorder and voice recorders in the main room of the cellar to record our vigil. The group arranged some chairs to allow us to sit in a circle. We all sat quietly, occasionally asking out for some sign of spirit. During the vigil, there seemed to be lots of noises coming from above us in the bar. We checked with the other group through our two-way radios, who assured us that they were sitting still and that no one was walking around. This was confirmed by watching the footage from the camera set up in he bar. We can find no explanation for these noises. There were also some noises picked up on the voice recorder. Several members of the group experienced distinct changes in temperature during the vigil. We also captured light anomalies on our still photographs and digital camcorders.

Group 1 held a vigil in this area later in the investigation and similarly experienced distinct temperature fluctuations and captured many light anomalies on both their still cameras and digital camcorders. They also experienced noises which they identified as footsteps from above and were able to rule out any man made explanation as the group who were investigating this area at the time were at the other side of the building using the communication board.
During a break, one of our motion sensors that had been set up in the cellar area was triggered, everybody who was present in the building was in the bar area at the time. We cannot explain this event.

Bar Area
After a short break, both teams joined together to attempt using the communication board. There was a lot of movement from the glass on the board. It seemed that we were communicating with Angus, a previous owner of the pub. We asked many questions and got great responses. We also had many other apparent messages come through and seemingly communicated with a host of other spirits who had messages for some of those sitting around the table. Brian McIver of the Daily Record, who accompanied us on this investigation was startled to find that we had an apparent communication with someone who wanted to talk to him, he proceeded to ask questions about his family to verify the communication, he was astonished when the red herring he threw into one of the questions was picked up on and corrected by whoever we had communicated with. We then asked if Angus was still present and captured a voice saying "Here I am" on one of our sound recorders - See EVP File 2

Later in the investigation Group 2 held a communication session again in the bar area using the board and received many messages both relating to the bar itself and to people who were sitting around the board.

The Saracen Head is a great location that has had many reported paranormal sightings and experiences. We would love to return at some point in the future to carry out further investigation.

We would like to say thank you to The Saracen Head for the chance to investigate this great location, for their warm welcome and excellent hospitality.
