Since the mid nineties where digital imaging has undergone a revolution in affordable consumer products not to mention advancements in it’s technological capabilities, ie, infa red & night vision. Paradoxically, paranormal investigators have bore witness to it’s own revolution in a phenomenon we now know as ORBS.
Orbs take their name from an American group of paranormal researchers who first coined the phrase. It is believed by many who have witnessed these spheres of light (energy) to be the first stage of a spiritual presence or manifestation. It is also claimed that orbs can exhibit signs of intelligence and can be witnessed moving in a controlled manner, some slow and deliberate, some fast and erratic, it has also been witnessed that faces or human resemblances can be made out in the sphere.

It was found by running a series of tests that cheap and physically small digital imagers had more chance of picking up these orbs due to the cameras illumination being close to the lens and not having a far enough reach into the dark. It also was discovered that dust, water vapour and insects could pass themselves of as orbs in the right conditions and all in all things were looking bleak. Early research into orbs heralded the usual speculation and infighting between the scientific and paranormal fields until a startling conclusion by Dr. Michael Persinger, a laboratory based Parasychologist who made the link between strong or varying EM fields and orb activity. Tests were carried out to expand on this theory and to also look at the orbs density, illumination & temperature as it was noted that they seemed to be reflective. Early skeptics announced that if indeed these orbs were ghostly manifestations then should they not be reflecting their own colour and not just that of the cameras light.

To give the skeptics more credence orbs only appeared when the cameras were switched to night vision mode strongly suggesting that orbs were indeed reflective bodies – returning the light from it’s source on the camera, either the flash tube or the IR LED’S. Although, that did not explain the unusual EMF readings associated with these lights.

On further investigation it was found by researchers that not all orbs fitted so well into this nice cosy explainable box, furthermore these “ different” orbs were only found in haunted locations in there most haunted part of that location. They are described as almost perfectly circular in outline, they are brighter and more dense than the others and all seemed to have a rainbow halo surrounding the denser core. It was concurred that snowflakes were the only type of similar structure that even resembled these orb anomalies and most people know when it’s snowing !! Hard to distinguish both, I know!!!
One explanation may be that century old phenomenon of ghost lights. Ghost lights are defined as luminous balls or irregular patches of light and their characteristics are defined as follows:

I. They appear in haunted locations.
II. They can only be seen from certain angles & distances.
III. They react to noise & light.
IV. They are most connected with hauntings involving tragedy.
V. EMF fluctuations almost inevitably accompany them.

Sounds Familiar!

In summing up. As always it is open to debate but one thing that cannot be denied is that there is something in this world that cannot and has not been labeled, categorized, simplified and classified as explainable by scientific and skeptical minds alike. As one reknowned book writer commented “has technology been created to such a level that only now are we in a position to understand & decipher what lies ahead and beyond our understanding”
