Investigation Procedure
The first part of the investigation involved medium Linda touring the building to channel information about any alleged spirits present and attempt to pick up on any 'paranormal hotspots'. Information sensed by Linda during this tour of the building was kept away from the rest of the team so as not to influence the main scientific part of the investigation.
Lower Bar
Linda first picked up on a very young child, perhaps only 6 months old by the name of Thomas who had passed in this room. She felt that this child had lived in the 1400s. She also felt the presence of a woman but from a different time period. Linda was able to find out that the woman was 59 years old but was unable to get a name from her. Linda felt that this was the area was used as a kitchen in the past and that the woman wanted the place to be very neat and tidy and to make sure that everything was done properly. Linda also picked up on a minstrel’s gallery, although due to the amount of renovations on the castle, it is unclear whether or not there was a minstrel’s gallery in this area.
Great Hall
Base temp – 13.3 degrees
Base EMF – No readings
Linda felt that there would have been banquets held in this room but not for large numbers of people, perhaps only 10 people. She also felt that this was used as living space. At the far end of the great hall, Linda could see a doorway leading outside. Although bricked up, this could easily have been a doorway in the past. Linda felt that someone was killed with a sword by a man called Edward. It was unclear who was killed but a young boy by the name of Charles witnessed the death. Linda also picked up on a man called James but could not get any further information on him. There also seemed to be a strong presence of a female servant called Elizabeth who was very upset as she had wanted to marry a man, Albert but he had been sent away. Linda felt that this woman would be heard crying at times in the upstairs area of the castle. Linda felt that another woman, called Mary would be seen wandering around outside, where there was a staircase in the past. We are unable at this point to confirm if there was a staircase in that area.
The team began by conducting a filmed séance. A night vision camcorder was set up and the team linked hands. During this session the team heard some loud but distant thuds and a couple of team members saw a white light appear at the doorway which seemed to move across the room and disappear into the wall. Although we continued this session for some time very little of note happened after this point.
We decided to try using a communication board in an attempt to get better responses but this was unsuccessful. However, the team heard a fairly loud groaning noise and there were quite a few fluctuations in the temperature. The temperature at the beginning of the session was 15 degrees. This increased to 19.5 degrees and stabilised for around 10 minutes. The temperature then dropped to 15 degrees and again stabilised. Mark asked if anyone present could reduce the temperature further and it did drop in increments to 14 degrees for about 5 minutes before rising again to 16.5 degrees. The temperature remained at 16.5 degrees for the remainder of the session. The team could find no logical explanation for the temperature changing so much within such a relatively short period of time.
The next part of the session in the Great Hall involved the team conducting audio experiments by using various recorders in attempt to pick up anomalous responses to our questions. Many relevant questions were asked and a period of approximately thirty seconds was left between each question. Several interesting EVP utterances were recorded (listed below). During the recording session some of the team heard scratching noises from the wall next to where they were sitting. The noises appeared to emanate from a small hole in the wall, this hole was checked using the hot wire anemometer for air movement to see if it led directly outside, no air movement was picked up. At the end of the session, two members of the team heard what sounded like a room full of people talking in the distance. The Ghost Finders team were the only people in the main part of the castle and no source was found for the voices. Two of the team also heard a woman’s voice close by but could not make out any distinct words. This was to prove interesting with regard to an incident that happened later in the investigation.
Among the audio recordings, the following files were recorded. ‘David’, ‘died just there’ and ‘hold them back’. When asking how many spirits were present, two responses were recorded ‘get out of this’ (EVP File 1) and ‘twenty’. When asking which year they lived there, the responses ‘62’ (EVP File 2), ‘back of the room’ (EVP File 3) and ‘speak to me’ were recorded. When asking any spirit presences if they could show themselves, the response ‘we can hear you’ was recorded. During one file when one of the team was speaking, a rather loud voice can be heard over the top saying ‘Bastard’ (EVP File 4). Other apparent responses were recorded during these audio experiments but they were not clear enough to determine what was being said.
Function Room
Base temp – 12.8 degrees
Base EMF – No readings
Linda felt that she was getting information on three specific time periods in this room, Firstly, in the 1400’s, she felt that this was a bedroom. She could see a woman being helped into a corset by the female servant Elizabeth, picked up on earlier. Coming forward in time to 1565, Linda felt that the room would have been used for meetings or decision making by three men. She could see them sitting round a large oval table. Again coming forward to 1875, Linda picked up on a man called Richard who she felt had owned the castle. She felt that Richard was a very generous man, eager to give what he could to those less fortunate.
The team decided to attempt a scrying experiment. Linda, Lisa and David all attempted this experiment by sitting very still in front of a large mirror and a night vision camcorder was set up to attempt to record the results. During this session all of them felt that they could see changes in their own faces but, these changes were not evident on the camcorder footage and not evident to the other people watching the experiment. The results of this experiment suggested that what was going on was purely psychological, possibly the result of pareidolia.
The next part of the session in the Function Room involved the team conducting audio experiments by using various recorders in attempt to pick up anomalous responses to questions. Many relevant questions were asked and a period of approximately thirty seconds was left between each question. Several interesting EVP utterances were recorded during this session. When asking for a full name, ‘David turn around and look at me’ was recorded. A question was asked relating to the previous scrying experiment and the following response was recorded, ‘make David better’ (EVP File 5). At the end of the audio experiments the team asked if there were any messages that spirit presences could give us before we moved to the next area, the response ‘David, listen to Mark’ was recorded. Another recorded response was 'we're here' (EVP File 6). Other apparent responses were recorded during these audio experiments but they were not clear enough to determine what was being said.
The team conducted a short filmed vigil in this room after the EVP experiments were complete. Nothing else of note occurred. EMF and temperature readings remained normal.
Upper Bar
Base temp – 13.5 degrees
Base EMF – No readings
Linda felt that this was another bedroom at one time but she felt that in 1565, when the meetings were taking place in the room next door, this would have been where the ladies waited for the men to finish their business. Linda felt that the layout was different and that the wall was in the wrong place. Linda felt the presence of a woman called Anne who seemed to be quite interested in what we were doing.
There were no scientific experiments conducted in this particular part of the castle.
Tower First Floor
Base temp – 11.5 degrees
Base EMF – No readings
Linda felt that this had been used as servant’s quarters and that this had been Elizabeth’s room. However, Linda felt that prior to this, prisoners may have been kept in this area as she was sensing two guards. She felt that the prisoners would have been children or people who had committed only petty crimes.
The session on the first floor of the tower involved the team conducting audio experiments by using various recorders in attempt to pick up anomalous responses to questions. Many relevant questions were asked and a period of approximately thirty seconds was left between each question. During this session the team picked up many apparent responses to the questions asked but frustratingly there seemed to be a high degree of distortion to many of them. One particular sound that was recorded during these experiments sounded like someone being sick. The only clear response recorded during this session was after the team had asked how many guards were present in the room, the reply was 'seven' (EVP File 7).
No temperature or EMF anomalies were picked up in this area of the castle.
Tower Second Floor
Base temp – 11 degrees
Base EMF – No readings
Linda felt there was a lot of negative energy in the tower and the further up we went, the more negative it seemed to be. Linda felt that there would have been prostitution, orgies and even black magic practised here. Linda picked up on the year 1728 as being significant to this. Linda also picked up on a man called Alexander whose face had been badly burnt. Linda felt that she could hear someone blowing a horn of some kind. She felt that this was a boy of about 17 or 18 years old, who was responsible for sounding the alarm if anyone was approaching the castle.
The team decided to attempt a communication board session in this area. Mark had planned that if any movement was picked up on the planchette, blindfolds would be placed over the eyes of the sitters to test for involuntary movement and to see if any coherent messages would come through under these conditions. However, this experiment never got so far as almost as soon as it had commenced everyone in the team began to hear loud noises as if furniture was being moved on a wooden floor. They also heard noises akin to people running around on a wooden floor. These noises were heard on no less than seven occasions. Two of the team decided to check the castle to make sure that nobody had entered the building without our knowledge. Mark and David descended the stairs down the tower to the top floor, then proceeded to make their way down to the Great Hall. On arriving outside the Great Hall doorway, which was closed, they paused to listen and both could quite clearly hear a woman’s voice. Both Mark and David full expected to be greeted by the castle owners on opening the door to the Great Hall but nobody was present in that room. They both scoured the castle going into every single room and were able to confirm that there was nobody else presenting the building. It became apparent after checking the main entrance doors to the castle that there was no way anyone could get inside. When the owner had left the building at the start of the investigation he had bolted the main door from the inside. One of our team had witnessed the owner leaving through the only fire exit and had securely closed the door behind him.
No other experiments were conducted on the second floor of the tower.
Tower Top Floor
Base temp – 10.4 degrees
Base EMF – No readings
Linda felt that this was the room where the negativity was coming from and in particular, she felt this is where the ‘black magic’ was practised. She could sense three women and a man who appeared to be the leader of the group. Linda felt very uncomfortable in this room and had to leave quite quickly due to an overwhelming feeling of nausea. During the walk round and while the rest of the team were taking base readings, a few members of the team had also felt quite uncomfortable in this room.
The final session of the investigation was conducted on the top floor of the tower. The team conducted more audio recording experiments by using various recorders in attempt to pick up anomalous responses to their questions. Many relevant questions were asked and a period of approximately thirty seconds was left between each question. Many apparent responses were recorded but many of them were distorted and difficult to make out. When asking for a name, t he team recorded ' Richard' (EVP File 8 ) in response. Interestingly enough, Linda had sensed the presence of a male named Richard in the Function Room during the initial walk round of the building. Two other clear responses were recorded, ' This is Tam Young' (EVP File 9) and ' David, speak' (EVP File 10) .
Nothing else of note happened during the session on the top floor of the tower. EMF and temperature readings remained unchanged.
Investigation Summary
The investigation at Mains Castle produced some results of note. Inexplicable temperature fluctuations were detected in the Great Hall over a short period of time and at one point, these fluctuations seemed to be in response to a request by a member of the team. A female voice was heard on two separate occasions around the Great Hall, both times being heard by more than one person. The sound of furniture being moved and the sound of running footsteps on wooden floors was heard many times within a short period by everyone on the team. It was verified that nobody else was present in the castle, nor could have been due to the building being locked. The audio experiments provided some interesting responses, one containing the name 'Richard' which had been picked up by medium Linda during her earlier walk round. Some of the other responses did seem to show an awareness of the questions asked or an awareness of the team by mentioning relevant names. Many of the audio experimental results contained apparent responses that were indiscernible. The communication board sessions were unsuccesful with no movement of the planchette being picked up. A seance was attempted in order to link energies in the hope of witnessng some pysical phenomena, nothing was picked up during that session. Night vision film footage and digital still photographs showed nothing of interest with only the odd orb being detected, these were put down to dust in the atmosphere. EMF readings throughout the building remained normal with readings only being detected near man made sources.
We would like to thank the owners of Mains Castle for giving us the opportunity to investigate this fabulous building for suspected paranormal activity.
