Hailes Castle
Located near Haddington, Eat Lothian, Hailes castle was built in the late 13th century and contains some of the oldest standing stonework in Scotland. The castle was originally the home of Hugo de Gourlay and his family.
Although the castle is now in ruins, there are still many areas intact. The central part of the castle consists of kitchen, chapel, north tower and storeroom. The east tower is not accessible but can be seen from the grounds. The west tower was built later by Sir Adam de Hepburn. There are two pit prisons, one in the north tower and another in the west tower.
The Investigation
We began by taking photographs, camcorder footage, temperature readings and EMF readings from all areas of the castle before sundown. There was nothing of any significance picked up except a few temperature fluctuations.
These fluctuations increased as night fell. There was an unexplainable reading of 1.5milligauss detected using the EMF meter in the storeroom where there was no apparent source. Where the temperature had been fairly constant, it was varying from 6 degrees to minus 18 degrees. This happened in the west tower and also in the storeroom.
During the investigation we did many vigils one of which was in the kitchen area, which proved to very eventful. There were several banging noises and footsteps, which seemed to come from above the kitchen, possibly form the chapel area. Two members of our team reported feeling something touch them. After checking back through the camcorder footage and digital photographs taken during this vigil, we found various flashes of light and orbs. All of the sounds, flashes and orbs occurred within a six minute period.
