Culzean Castle - Brief History

Culzean Castle is located on the Ayrshire coast in the west of Scotland. The castle, as it is today, was built in 1777, but the original building was built in 1165. The castle was owned by the Clan Kennedy for 800 years, and is now owned by the National Trust of Scotland. There are underground tunnels connected to the castle, which were allegedly used by smugglers. The castle allegedly has several active ghosts.

The Investigation

We began the evening by doing a walkround of the entire castle with our psychic medium, Scott. Scott did not know where our investigation was going to take place and was brought to the location by one of our investigators. He managed to come up with lots of interesting information and also some names and dates. Much of the information that Scott gave we could corroborate using our knowledge of the history of the Castle and past sightings. As well as filming the walkround using digital camcorders, we took temperature and EMF readings and still digital photographs in all areas of the castle. You can view a selection of our photos by clicking here. One of our photos seems to show strange red rings appearing in the Armoury during our walk round.

As the Earl’s Bedroom is supposedly the most active room in the castle, we decided to set up some locked off equipment. We set up digital camcorders and voice recorders and left the area. We managed to capture some strange light anomalies and we also picked up voices on our voice recorders, the voices seemed to be whispering even as we were talking to each other (Click here to listen to one of the files). During our investigation, we split into two teams and both teams spent some time doing vigils in the Earl’s bedroom. We did manage to capture many voices on the voice recorders and some of our team members did see something moving towards the bed, but we did not catch this on any of our camcorders, there was also some very sharp temperature fluctuations. Later in the evening, we spent some more time in this room with our medium, who picked up on a couple, a man and a woman that he felt were active in this room. He came up with the names Henry and Mary. Towards the end of our investigation Paul locked off another camcorder in the Earl’s Bedroom for 1 hr approx and on play back has managed to capture some amazing light anomalies moving around the room (See video files at top of page).

State Room

We decided to try a séance in the State room, led by our psychic medium. Some members of our team experienced some unusual temperature changes during the séance. We also captured a voice on one of our voice recorders. Scott picked up on a man called James who seemed to be getting increasingly agitated with us, he was upset at our presence in this room as his mother had died here. This was supported when we played the contents of our voice recorder back and heard a voice saying “ You fuckin’ bastard” (Click here to listen). EMF readings were normal.

Kitchen

We managed to capture some light anomalies in the still photographs taken in the kitchen. During our earlier walkround, Scott picked up on a small child in the kitchen area. Later, while we were investigating this area, he picked up on a young boy, about 9 years old, who had been caught stealing meat from the kitchen. He also picked up on the year 1785, perhaps to do with the young boy. Nothing was captured on our camcorders. EMF readings and temperature readings were normal.

Study

The team spent some time in the study, during which we tried a séance. We did not capture anything significant on the camcorders or still photographs. EMF readings and temperature readings were normal. Scott our psychic medium did pick up on a woman called Elizabeth and her children, and a feeling of isolation or separation. He also felt the year 1876 was significant.

Round Room

We spent some time in the round room, one of the reception rooms upstairs. There was a noticeably happy atmosphere in this room. Scott picked up on a feeling of celebration and happiness in this room. He also picked up on a woman sitting on a chair looking out of the window. During a vigil, some of our team noticed flashing lights around one of the pictures in the room. We decided that it would be a good idea to have the entire team spend some time in this room. During this time, many of the team saw lights around the painting, but unfortunately nothing was captured on any of our camcorders which we found bizarre as there had many been quite a few witnesses to these lights.

Culzean Castle is a fabulous location that has had many reported paranormal sightings and experiences. We would love to return at some point in the future to carry out another investigation.
