Culceuch Castle - Brief History

Culcreuch Castle was built in 1296 by Maurice Galbraith. The Clan Galbraith was among one of the most powerful clans in central Scotland. The castle stayed in the hands of the Galbraiths until the 17 th century. It was then given away by the last chief, Robert Galbraith, to satisfy creditors when he fled to Ireland after being outlawed in 1630. The clan has been without a chief ever since. The present owners have carefully restored the interior of the castle, blending the past with modern comforts. Nowadays, as well as being a thriving tourist attraction, Culcreuch specialises in weddings and functions.

Chinese Bird Room

The Chinese Bird room is one of the hotel bedrooms, named after the antique hand painted wallpaper.

Many past sightings have been reported and in particular the ghost of an older woman has been spotted next to the bed. We investigated the Chinese Bird room using sound recording equipment, digital camcorders, EMF meter and digital cameras. There were no unusual readings on the EMF meters, however we did catch many orbs within this room, both on digital cameras and camcorders. We also managed to capture many flashing orbs using our digital camcorders, both during our séance and on a later locked off camcorder, you can view 2 of our video files from this room by clicking the links at the top of this page. We also captured many small lights travelling around the room. Our digital voice recorders also managed to pick up some EVP, one file of which you can listen to by clicking EVP file1 at the top of this page.

Dining Room

The dining room has a distinctly cold and opressive atmosphere and we were advised by staff that no matter how long the fire has been on, they are unable to get the room to heat up. We decided to try another séance in the hope of getting more of a response. We used digital sound recorders, digital cameras, digital camcorders and EMF meters. Again, there seemed to be no unusual readings on the EMF meters. There were a lot of orbs picked up on both the digital cameras and camcorders. The most unusual finding was the sound of a woman’s scream picked up on one of our digital camcorders, click on EVP file2 at the top of this page to listen to the file. No one in the group heard any noise at the time, which seems strange as the scream was notably louder than our voices.

Lower Bar

The lower bar area proved to be the highlight of our investigation. We began by taking digital pictures and EMF readings. One picture taken, showed a blue mist. We also caught many orbs. We were advised that there had been many strange things reported in this area, so we decided to try communicating with the spirits. We used a small glass on top of a table and had designated areas on the table for yes and no answers. A group of us sat around the table with one finger each lightly on top of the glass. We did get some slight movements and so decided to move to another table in the same area. It was worth the wait as soon after, we got a stronger communication. It seemed we were communicating with the spirit of a young boy, whom we believe was wrongly accused of stealing cattle. Thanks to the information given to us by Graeme, the bar manager, we managed to confirm that the boy’s name was Eoin Mackay. The responses we were getting were breathtaking. It was very clear that this young boy had a message to give us. It seemed that what he wanted, was for us to tell as many people as possible, that he was innocent. We asked many questions and the glass responded with some startling movement. The communication lasted for just over an hour, and at times the glass was moving and twisting so fast, that our investigators had difficulty keeping their fingers on it, in fact on a few occasions there was only two people out of the five participating that were actually touching the glass. We would like to thank the bar manager Graeme for taking part in this communication. It appears that the spirit of Eoin Mackay is looking after Graeme in his time working at Culcreuch.

Throughout our investigation, we captured many orbs, light anomalies and EVP. We also experienced many strange feelings in certain areas of the castle.

Culcreuch Castle is a fantastic location that has had many reported paranormal sightings and in our experience is very rich in paranormal activity. We hope to return at some point in the future to carry out another investigation.

We would like to say thank you to Culcreuch Castle for the chance to investigate this fantastic location, for their warm welcome and excellent hospitality.
