The Investigation
We began the investigation by doing a walkround of the entire building. During this walkround, we took lots of still photographs. We also took base temperature readings using both the digital thermometer and the laser thermometer, and base EMF readings throughout the entire building. We picked up several light anomalies on digital cameras during the walkround. The temperature did not vary greatly throughout the building except for the cellar area which was distinctly colder than the other rooms. We picked some unusual EMF readings in the main bar area of up to 5 milligauss, especially around one of the pictures hung on the wall. When the picture was taken down, the readings stopped immediately. Once the picture was replaced, no further readings were detected. After our walkround, we gathered together to make our plan for the evening.
Main Bar
We began with a communication session in the main bar area. We set up the communication board at one table and the automatic writing planchette at another table. With a group at each table we began asking for communication using either method. There was no distinct movement on the communication board during this time, however we did get movements on the automatic writing planchette, shapes were drawn but no clear words were written. Photographs taken during this time did show some orbs around the participating groups. There were some cold drafts felt around the communication board and this was confirmed using the temperature gauges. A small drop in temperature had occurred.
While this vigil was taking place, we left camcorders filming in the lounge area as well as motion sensors and trigger objects. One of the motion sensors was set off for no apparent reason and we can confirm that no one entered the lounge during this time. The trigger objects were not moved but we did pick up some orbs on the locked off camcorders. All EMF readings remained normal.
Lounge
We then moved into the lounge area. Some of the team took more digital photographs and we picked up several large orbs around one of the seats. During this time, one of our team noticed a shadow moving past the window, this was witnessed on 3 occasions. We investigated this and on exiting the door we found ourselves in a locked off garden area, we found no traces of anyone having been there. A couple of our team members decided to run voice recorders outside and picked up definite responses, but rather frustratingly, no clear words can be heard. The figure passing the window has been spotted many times in the past and has been reported to be a man wearing a blue uniform.
We decided to try another communication session to see if we would have more success in this area. Almost as soon as we began, the glass on the communication board began to move. Through a series of questions and answers, it seemed that we were communicating with a young girl called Christina. She and her brother David seemed to be looking for their mother. We got some information about other people who were also there. There seemed to be a man called Edward who made the children cry. One of our team felt someone gripping his arm and when we asked for information on who this was, using the board, we were given the name Irene Simpson.
After the session, we checked this information with the owners and they did not know anything of the children or the man called Edward. They did however know of the woman Irene Simpson, who had apparently lived in the building before it had been turned into a pub. We picked up some orbs during the filming of this session but no temperature or EMF changes were detected during this session. We also picked up many voices on our voice recorders in this area including the following files, "dave should do that" & "for fuck's sake move this thing".
We decide to split into 3 groups to cover the areas as thoroughly as possible. One group set up in the main bar area, another headed to the cellar and the rest stayed in the lounge area.
Main Bar
During this vigil we used digital camcorders and voice recorders to try to get some kind of communication. We sat quietly in the dark asking for any spirits to make themselves known to us in any way they could. We noticed that a candle burning at the far end of the bar was flickering from time to time and so we asked if any spirits present could try to blow the candle out. To our astonishment, the flame got smaller and smaller for no known reason, but did not go out entirely. This happened a few times during the vigil and the timing of it seemed to be in response to us asking for the candle to be blown out. We picked up some orbs on the digital camcorders, video file 1, video file 2. Our voice recorders picked up many voices, answers to our questions were apparent , but most of them seemed to be very distorted and were difficult to make out. No temperature or EMF changes were detected during this time.
Cellar
The cellar area has been a hot spot for past activity.
During this vigil we used camcorders and voice recorders to try for some communication. The team sat quietly and asked for any spirits to make themselves known. One of the team felt something touch his back as he sat in the cellar and after examining the camcorder footage, it can clearly be seen that there was no physical object near his back at this time. Another member of the experienced felt that he saw something standing by the door, just out of the corner of his eye and cold drafts were felt at various times. Many loud bangs and tapping noises were heard during this vigil and some definitely seemed to be in response to our questions, although this could have been coincidence. There were some light anomalies picked up on the camcorders, video file 3. Some voices were also picked up on the voice recorders including the following, "its peter" & "you heard me". No EMF changes were detected during this time.
Lounge
During this vigil we used voice recorders to try to get some communication. The group asked for some responses but no clear words could be detected on the voice recorders during this session. The group decided to have another try with the communication board as this seemed to have been successful during the earlier session. However no movement on the board was detected during this vigil. There were some noises heard in the lounge area that we have been unable to find any explanation for. Some people also felt cold spots during this time. No EMF changes were detected.
After the investigation had finished, at 6am, some of the team decided to try to get some sleep in the lounge area. We settled down for the night, but a few of us were unable to get any sleep due to the amount of loud bangs and sounds of movement that could be heard in the same room as us. Also a light was seen by two different members of our team, this light seemed to be very bright and lit up part of the room. There is no road outside this part of the building, which rules out the possibility of the light being caused by a passing car. Unfortunately we did not have camcorders running at this time so it is difficult to determine the reason for this.
Summary
The Abbey Inn is a great location which seems to have a lot of unexplainable activity. We found this to be a very interesting investigation and our findings certainly suggest that there is more to the Abbey Inn than meets the eye. We picked up much visual and audible phenomena, along with information through our communication board, some of which we were able to later verify with the owners.
